Pick + Sip

The aim of our Pick and Sip Experience is to provide an informative, engaging and memorable wine tasting experience for our visitors.

Our Wine Sensory Garden is a totally unique wine experience in the Margaret River region, being the only one of its kind in Australia.

Pick + Sip in the Garden

Our Wine Sensory Garden is the centre piece of our Pick and Sip wine tasting experience, with its plantings of fruit trees, herbs, flowers and seasonal vegetables which describe and match the flavours, textures and styles of our wines.

The Garden is designed in a figure eight, infinity shape with sections themed for seven different wine varieties.

For each wine there is a ‘Descriptor Bed’ planted with fruit trees, flowers and herbs which describe the aromas and flavours in that wine. The adjacent ‘Affinity Bed’ has plantings of fruit trees, seasonal vegetables and herbs which have an affinity for, or pair with, that particular wine

A Pick and Sip Experience in the Wine Sensory Garden will immerse all of your five senses in the tasting experience and you will discover along the way how to describe the flavours that you are tasting in a wine as well as learning how simple it is to pair food with wine.

Pick + Sip + Savour In The Garden

If you are thinking of a food and wine experience, then we can most certainly assist! We may not have a cafe or restaurant, but who needs that when there’s a brilliant cafe just a few minutes drive down the road from us at Hippo Lakes!

The Pick, Sip and Savour experience is the perfect combination and great value for 2 people! It starts with a Pick + Sip Tour through the wine sensory garden with the winemaker learning about wine flavours, winemaking and pairing wine with food.

At the end of the Pick + Sip experience you can then relax in a quiet spot in the wine sensory garden, and enjoy the delicious platter prepared by Hippo Lakes, with accompanying glasses of Whicher Ridge Wines.

Seasonal Pick + Sip + Garden Experiences

Due to the changing seasonal influences on our Garden throughout the year, we offer several different seasonal wine and garden related experiences.

In Winter when the rain and wind can be a challenge, we offer two different times for our Sip + Stroll Garden Tour. Wander through the wine sensory garden with Cathy the winemaker and gardener and learn how the idea for the garden came about, and how it has evolved into becoming the centrepiece for our award winning tasting experience.

In late Spring right through until late Summer, is when our Sip + Savour Soirée is happening! The Wine Sensory Garden is a real delight to be in on a summer evening! Booking in for a Soirée is a superb way to wind down after a day busy of sightseeing, work, or simply an excuse to catch up with friends sharing a gourmet platter.

Fantastic time on the “Pick & Sip Garden Tour & Wine Tasting”, educational and very enjoyable. The Sensory Garden is stunning, many thanks Cathy for a great experience. Highly recommended if you’re visiting the South West region of Western Australia.

Whicher Ridge Pick and Sip was wonderful!

On a very hot summers on the last day of 2020, we arrived at Whicher Ridge winery. It is a little off the beaten track but a lovely country drive. We were greeted by Polly the dog on arrival, tail-a-wagging and eager to show us the way to the cellar door! Cathy was great. Knowledgeable, down to earth, and a good sense of humour. The wines were absolutely lovely, I regret not trying a few more! Will just have to order some more online! The sensory garden was a delight, if you like gardens and wines then it just the perfect combination. If its a scorcher of a day though, do wear sunscreen or maybe even bring a little umbrella as the garden is enclosed and the sun can really be like a laser in the afternoon. Special note to say the hamper was just delicious. I think that was one of the very nicest quiches I have had in a long time. I could easily have scoffed the whole lot and not shared a crumb! A really lovely, low key, relaxed, fun, educational experience with some really delightful wines and would highly recommend a visit! :-)
