2016 Une Rangee Petit Verdot

2016 Une Rangee Petit Verdot

We have one row of this variety in our Whicher Ridge vineyard which we planted in 2005, Une Rangée is the French translation for One Row.  It is a late ripening variety, not always harvested if it has been a mild Summer as it fails to ripen fully, and we usually harvest and blend it into another wine, so we rarely make a varietal wine out of 100% petit verdot, but this vintage we did!

The grapes are harvested when the flavours are in the riper spectrum of blackberries, ripe cherries and dark plum, and still retaining some spicy, savoury flavours. Our winemaking philosophy is to handle our red ferments following traditional, artisanal red winemaking practices with minimal additions. We ferment our Petit verdot in an open topped fermenter for 7 days. Daily hand plunging of the skin cap in the morning, is followed later in the day with a ‘drain and return’. After fermentation it is pressed off through our basket press and matured for 2 years in old French oak barrels.

Deep inky purple with dark plum red hues. Aromas of blackerries, plums, dark chocolate, bay leaf and savoury black olive. Flavours of ripe cherries and raspberries, dark chocolate and plums are balanced by textured, grainy tannins. The wine has lingering spicy flavours of nutmeg and bay leaf. This wine will cellar well for the next 8-10 years, or perhaps longer

We have one row of this variety in our Whicher Ridge vineyard which we planted in 2005. Une Rangée is the French translation for One Row. Our Petit Verdot is made in ‘petit’ volumes with only 120 cases made in 2016.

Vintage in the Geographe Wine region for Cabernet Sauvignon was delayed with heavy rain in mid January 2016 due to a tropical storm, followed by mild to warm day time and cool night time temperatures for the rest of Summer and into early Autumn. The extended ripening time was a benefit though, producing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes which were quite exceptional with their intense flavours, savouriness and ripe tannin structures.

The grapes are Estate grown in our Whicher Ridge Vineyard, nestled in a hidden valley in the Whicher Range. Our vineyard is at an elevation of 170 metres above sea level. The vines are planted in ancient gravelly ironstone hillside plantings, and the cool winds at night coming off the Southern Ocean during summer, give rise to wines of intensity and finesse.

Our grape growing philosophy is to use sustainable biological farming practices in our vineyard. We do not use pesticides and use a minimal spray application programme to prevent disease. Undervine grasses and flowering plants are retained throughout the year, providing habitats that encourage predatory insects and insect diversity throughout our vineyard
